Celebrate Spring with a Décor Change

Everything changes in spring — the light becomes brighter, colours pop, birds sing, and life just looks like it got an upgrade.

While spring doesn’t officially begin until March 20, this is probably a good time to begin tweaking your décor now, given the mild winter we’re experiencing.

Does the idea of changing your décor for spring strike you as unusual? Perhaps it shouldn’t. Breathing new life into your décor at the beginning of each season is like changing your wardrobe — it not only reflects the changes happening around you, but also enhances what’s best about them.

With that said, here are some tips on how to celebrate spring with your décor:

Change or store your rugs. There is no point anymore in having that sheepskin rug on the floor. Replace it with a thinner, lighter carpet in bolder colours, or consider leaving your floors bare.
Speaking of colour, adding bursts of bright colour (as well as energetic patterns and cheerful springtime motifs) is another great way to transition into springtime. You can achieve this by adding new accessories such as cushions, tea towels, vases, and lampshades. (If you’re a DIY type of person, this page explains how to make your own bright lampshade.)
Go floral. Winter is a great time to work logs and branches into your décor. Flowers are more appropriate now. (Click here for a list of wildflowers that will soon bloom in Ontario.)
Choose lightweight window treatments. And for a fun and inexpensive tieback, why not try a striped fabric belt?

Three Fine Musicians to Play in Georgetown

If you’re not free this Friday evening, you should be.

Beginning at 7:30 pm, in the Knox Presbyterian Church at 116 Main Street South, three of Canada’s finest songwriters will play for you.

It gets better: they will also talk with you about their music, giving you a unique behind-the-scenes look at what they do.

Dean McTaggart’s career launched in 1981 as the lead singer/songwriter of the Canadian pop/rock group The Arrows. Dean has toured across North America and Europe, received two Juno Award nominations for Songwriter Of Year, and penned hits for international stars Wynonna Judd, Tina Arena, Terri Clark, Amanda Marshall, and Kellie Coffey.

Kevin Breit is a renowned guitar player who has worked as a session musician with a variety of musicians including The Miller Stain Limit, Norah Jones, Michael Kaeshammer, and Celine Dion. He also performs as a solo artist and as a member of the folk group Folkalarm.

Katherine Wheatley is a former geologist who became a professional musician after the success of her second album, Habits and Heroes. She plays over 100 concerts a year in Canada and the U.S., mostly acoustic venues and folk festivals.

This Sunday, yet again, is a great day for music lovers in Georgetown. That’s when the Georgetown Bach Chorale will host Winter Scenes, a piano recital by virtuoso Ron Greidanus.

Including Medtner's Sonata Reminiscenza, subtitled "Vergessene Weisen," and Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux Op.39, the recital will be followed by an offering of warm soups, fine cheeses, and freshly baked bread for the audience to enjoy.

As we wrote before, the Farmers’ Market in downtown Georgetown is a fantastic place to savour fresh local produce, fruits, meats, baked goods, sweets, and maple syrup — all while you stroll through beautiful, historic streets.

Of course, the Farmers’ Market isn’t open now. Indeed, it won’t open until July. Does that mean you can’t get excellent, healthy food until after the winter?

A Place for Georgetown Art Lovers

One of the places where Georgetown art lovers can indulge in their passion is Artisan’s Attic Gallery & Gifts, a co-operative of local artists and crafters now in its 15th year.

Located right in downtown Georgetown at 73 Main Street South, the Artisan’s Attic houses their original work in addition to that of more than 20 other artists.

Drop by to admire, among other things, functional and decorative pottery, weaving, basketry, jewellery, original paintings and limited edition prints, photography, stained glass, blown glass, metal sculpture, and wood-working.

The Artisan’s Attic website is under construction, but they do have an active Facebook page, where they have posted some of their members’ artwork.

Time to Throw Away Holiday Decorations?

Now that the New Year has begun (and with Christmas officially ending today) this weekend is probably a good time to take down your holiday decorations, if you haven’t done so already.

But given that some people are not overly fond of taking down decorations that highlighted such happy moments, why not seize the opportunity to redecorate rather than just put it all away?

An interesting array of objects makes for a unique mantel.

For example, examine your mantel, where most people typically display family pictures. Consider replacing them, even if just temporarily, with a stoneware grouping, books, or framed art. (This website has great suggestions.)

This is also a good time to throw away objects and furniture you always wanted to get rid of but never found the time to. Donate them to charity or recycle what you can. (Incidentally, did you know you can recycle your Christmas tree?)

Christmas Dinner Décor

With friends, family, and good food and drink coming together this weekend, it’s important to make sure your Christmas décor is up to the occasion. The trick is to make your home look elegant, yet cozy, which isn’t always easy.

Assuming you’ve already set up your Christmas tree and wreath, these tips will ensure your home (and your dining table) look their very best.

You can never have too many lights. Actually, you can, but since most people don’t put up nearly enough lights feel free to add more. String them up on your fireplace, if you have one, or hang them from the windows.
Use candles. Similar to lights, it’s hard to have too many candles. Just make sure they’re out of reach of pets and children, and don’t leave them unattended.
Place fir branches, pinecones, and apples on your mantel and dining table. You can arrange them on a tray beside a candle.
Freshly cut flowers on your table will raise the elegance quotient.
Nothing says “party” like an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne in it.
Why not place an assortment of small gifts in the centre of the table, or better yet, on each plate?

The Single Most Important Tip To Enhance Your Décor

Wall fireplaces. Fancy furniture. Thick Persian carpets. Framed art. These are but some of the myriad ways in which you can improve your décor.

The inescapable truth, however, is that nothing beats the colour of your walls in terms of how its affects your décor. You can have the best furniture, the best art, the best house even, but paint your walls in the wrong colours, and the effort will have been wasted.

Read on to find out what steps you should take before deciding on a colour palette.

• First Things First

There are two basic approaches: do you want to let your art and furnishings pop, or do you prefer your walls and trims to do the talking?

If you prefer the former, an easy solution is to paint the walls white, making sure the rest pops. (Note that even this solution isn’t so simple as it may seem.)

• Feel It

What do you want to feel like when you walk into your home (or into a specific room)? Energized? Relaxed? Different websites will allow you to find a colour palette that evokes these feelings. (This article provides you with a good primer.)

• Be Inspired

You can browse one of many décor magazines, or you can browse online. Bookmark or save pictures of room that inspire you.

• Go Vertical

A foolproof way to make any room look good is to use darker colours for the floor, medium colours for the walls, and light ones for the ceiling. It works, experts say, because it replicates the outside world, where the earth is darker than the buildings and trees, which in turn are darker than the sky.

• Use the Numbers

Sixty percent of the space should be painted in your dominant colour. (This will most likely be your walls.) Your secondary colour will take 30 percent of the space (probably the upholstery), and the remaining 10 percent will make up the rest, providing a shot of colour in accessories.

Season’s End Concert In Georgetown

Some people say it wouldn’t be Christmas in Georgetown without the Georgetown Society Christmas concert, which is taking place this Saturday.

Whether you love Christmas concerts or haven’t really gone to that many of them, you want to go to this one, if only to become familiar with this important local event. It also closes off the Georgetown Choral Society’s year-long 40th anniversary celebration.

Starting with “Gloria,” a new piece by talented young Canadian composer Andrew Gilpin, the concert will also feature traditional carols and beautiful classical and contemporary Christmas music.

Holiday Décor

Now that the holidays are less than a month away, isn’t it time you began decorating your home? After all, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are among the merriest celebrations of the year, and among the few that call for their own unique temporary redecoration.

Of course, with holiday décor, there is often the risk of overdoing things. Our tips will ensure that your home doesn’t end up looking like a kitsch version of itself.

Focus on making your home warm. This is the time to relax and snuggle up. Consider placing sheepskin or Persian rugs around your home. Add curtains over your blinds if you haven’t already, and lay a mohair or cashmere throw on the couch.
To make the room feel even warmer, use candles — lots of candles. Put them on the windowsill (but first make sure they are far from the curtains, or simply use electric candles). You can also put them on the mantelpiece or on a table. (The standard disclaimer applies: never leave candles unattended.)
Have kids? Then you have budding artists in the family. Showcase some of their art and ornaments from previous years. And if you have room for two trees, give one to the kids along with a license to decorate it any way they like — you’ll likably be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Don’t Miss This Local Arts Event

Art seems to be thriving this winter in Georgetown. In addition to last week’s art exhibit, there is yet another exciting artistic event tomorrow and the day after. This is when Credit Valley Artisans will present their Winter Show & Sale, which is held yearly, allowing you to view their work and of course to pick up a piece for yourself (or to get a head start on Christmas shopping!).

Cedarvale Park on Main Street and Maple Avenue.

The event will take place at the Cedarvale Cottage at Cedarvale Park on Main Street and Maple Avenue, from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and from noon to 4 pm on Sunday.

Items of pottery, stained glass, weaving, spinning and paintings will be available. There will also be a fundraising raffle with prizes, a baked goods table and light refreshments.

Called “Big Show, Small Works,” the exhibit will feature pieces by artists such as Marlene Madole, Helen Vella, Christine Montague, Karen Reczuch, Carol-Ann Michaelson, and many others.

In our last blog post we recommended a few simple kitchen décor tips. Why the kitchen? Because many people tend to neglect it, focusing instead on living room décor, or décor in other rooms that they think guests will see more often.

But the reality is that many people do see your kitchen. More to the point, an even larger amount of people will see your bathroom.

So without further ado, a few tip on how to decorate yours.

There are two main elements to bathroom décor: storage and lighting. Lighting is always taken into consideration when we design our bathrooms (although we do recommend, from an aesthetic point of view, that you consider adding candles to your bathroom décor).

For this reason, we’ll focus here on storage solutions that will help you have a well-organized, beautiful bathroom.

Storage

When you think about it, a bathroom stores a surprising amount of objects — from bathrobes, hand towels, and bath towels to toiletries, brushes, toilet paper, keepsakes such as shells, and maybe even a scale.

In addition to (or instead of) furniture with proper built-in storage, weave basket cases can provide a solution that also looks great.

Also, if you store necessities and small objects on top of your bathroom counter, take a cue from the best hotels and try grouping them on a tray.

Empty glass bottles, vintage bottles — even bottles that used to contain alcoholic beverages — can be used to store liquids, cotton balls, and pretty much anything that strikes your fancy.

Other Tips

Nothing beats a warm towel in wintertime. Get a towel warmer. It won’t just make you feel spoiled when you put a warm towel around you — it will help keep your towels dry.

Simple Tips for Kitchen Décor

When discussing décor, most people think of the living room first. Yet there is another part of your home where you spend plenty of time, and that often becomes a central hub for family to gather or the centre of a party — one where a proper décor is certain to influence the way your day begins. This room is the kitchen.

Of course, some of the most important aspects that affect your kitchen décor are determined by your choice of home. At Double Oak we make it a point to ensure your time in the kitchen won’t just be pleasant, but also efficient.

You can also use beautiful functional pieces, such as a Dualit toaster or an interesting (or eclectic or something? “cool” not the right word for this demographic) spice rack, to double as display.

• Who said art doesn’t belong in the kitchen? Paintings or posters can definitely brighten things up.

• Use canisters, tins, tubs, and baskets to store cereals, sugar, and other ingredients.

• Consider a chalkboard to show messages to the family or even the day’s menu. Some chalkboards are magnetized, which means you can attach leaflets and recipes to it with small magnets.

Famous Designer Worked with Double Oak

Do you watch HGTV? If so, you probably know that a new show with one of Canada’s foremost designers, Sarah Richardson, has become quite a hit with Canadian TV viewers.

Having had the pleasure of working with Sarah when she designed the interior décor in one of a series of Double Oak custom homes, we understand the success of her show.

A Double Oak home at our Silver Creek community. How do you like the décor?

Sarah did an incredible job in the home we built, which was inspired by French provincial chateaus. This home backed, along with other Double Oak homes on 50’ lots, onto a 250-acre protected ravine that surrounds a tributary of the Credit River. And once Sarah was done with it, it looked stunning.

The HGTV show is called Sarah’s House and depicts her through the entire process of purchasing a farmhouse and renovating it room by room to transform it into an elegant country retreat.

In this season, she also worked her magic in the living room of a regular (not custom) Double Oak home at our Mystique community.

Tips For Gardening in the Fall

You have or may be thinking about buying a beautiful Double Oak home. You have a welcoming living room, an inviting dining room, and décor with a timeless appeal.

But what about the garden?

Fall is a great time to take care of your garden. It’s not too hot or too cold, for one thing, which makes spending time outdoors quite pleasant.

That’s not the only reason, though. The following 3 steps will help you see why fall is an ideal gardening season in many respects.

Pop “Icicle” pansies into the same spots where you cleared out summer annuals. Known for their ability to overwinter when planted in the fall, they will bloom until December before they lie down for the rest of the cold season. Make sure you cover them with evergreen cuttings until spring, and they'll sprout new flower buds.
Leaves are plant food. Spread small leaves of trees under shrubs and exposed soil. They will degrade into mineral nutrients.
Fall is also a good time for planting evergreen trees and shrubs (with one caveat: they must be well watered before the ground freezes).

How To Prep Your Home For The Fall

In case today’s grey weather isn’t enough of a reminder, you should probably begin thinking about preparing your home for the new season.

These 6 tips are easy to follow yet extremely helpful.

1. Inspect your Fireplace and Chimney

If allowed to accumulate, ash and grime can clog up your chimney. Have it inspected now and you’ll prevent headaches later.

2. Trim Trees and Bushes

The idea is to prevent branches from falling on your home—or even worse, on you as you go for a walk in the garden.

3. Examine Exterior Vents

All outside vents, filters, and dampers should be clean and serviceable. If blocked, exterior events can hinder airflow from leaving your home.

4. Replace Filters

This will ensure heating and cooling systems work properly.

5. Turn Off Exterior Faucets

This can wait until further ahead, but please make sure you don’t forget. Otherwise your pipes could burst when undrained water freezes and expands.

6. Check Stripping and Caulking

Go for a stroll around your home, examining the windows and doors. Caulk gaps or apply weatherstripping as needed.

Follow these tips sooner rather than later and you will have a pleasant fall, with time for walks in the neighbourhood, hot chocolate, and meeting friends!

An exciting event will take place in Georgetown in two weeks. Called International Flavours, it’s proved a hit every single year.

But if you want to eat to your heart’s content on Saturday, October 1st during the International Flavours event—if you want to savour delicious food and try diverse Georgetown restaurants—if you want to do all that and more, you can’t just mark the date in your calendar.

Georgetown offers delicious food in many restaurants.

To ensure you’re able to participate, you have to make sure you get a passport. They only cost $20 and will get you food samples at participating restaurants.

Passports are already for sale as you read this, and there are only 350 of them. As this article notes, they do run out quickly, so be sure to get yours soon! You can buy one in any of the participating businesses.

Summer may be almost over, but that doesn’t mean you’ll run out of fun outdoor activities.

Beginning today, the Georgetown Fall Fair kicks off for the 165th year in a row. One of the biggest community events in Halton Hills, the Fair isn’t just fun—it also does a great job of reminding Georgetown inhabitants of what a rich urban and rural environment surrounds them.

Do You Know This Historic Georgetown Attraction?

What do Casa Loma, Toronto’s Old City Hall, and a 131-year-old Georgetown apartment building have in common?

They were all designed by renowned Canadian architect E. J. Lennox.

Berwick Hall, the apartment building in question, was until 1904 home to prominent Georgetown businessman and politician John R. Barber, who had it built after his previous house burned down.

Come World War II, the old house was converted to an apartment building, and still stands on 139 Main Street South, a short distance from Mystique and Silver Creek.

Built in the Queen Anne style, Berwick Hall remains an impressive sight as well as a historic monument. By all means visit Casa Loma and Old City Hall if you haven’t yet. But on the next sweltering summer day, as tourists swarm these two attractions, isn’t it nice to know you’ll be able to take a casual stroll to Berwick Hall to admire a work of art by the same man?

Now that summer is approaching its end, it also means back-to-school season for the kids, whether yours are in kindergarten, high school, or university.

For all the parents of young kids, this weekend is the perfect opportunity for you to learn about the great programs offered for your children in Georgetown. This Sunday August 28^th, Georgetown Kids Registration Expo and BBQ for Robbies Rainbow will take place at 324 Guelph St. from 10am ‘til 4pm.

At the expo, you will find information about all the fun activities and programs that your children can pursue. Whether it’s art, music, or sports that interests your children, you’ll find it at the expo!

There will also be fun activities at the event, so your kids can play and meet new friends. Sales from the event’s BBQ will raise money for the Robbie’s Rainbow Fund to help children with Crohn’s Disease.

Listen to Top-Notch Classical Music in Georgetown

If you live in Georgetown, you owe it to yourself to come listen to pianist and conductor Ron Greidanus and other musicians this coming Tuesday August 9^th and again on the 16^th.

In fact, you probably want to listen to him even if you live further away. See for yourself:

Having studied locally as well as in Amsterdam, New York, and Santander, Greidanus has performed as a recitalist, chamber musician, and soloist with an orchestra in over 30 countries.

Greidanus has also conducted large orchestras such as the Brampton Symphony Orchestra and currently works as the artistic director of the Georgetown Bach Chorale, which he leads as a conductor in period performances of Baroque music.

This coming Tuesday, Greidanus will play one of Rachmaninoff’s most difficult piano concerto, No. 3 in D minor, with pianist Katheryn Tremills. Later, on August 16^th, cellist Mary Katherine Finch and violinists Edwin Huzinga and Carol Gimble will join Greidanus to present Faure’s piano quartet No.1 in C minor.

Make Any Room Stand Out With These 3 Objects

We know many of our readers have an interest in décor, so we’ve written about how to post family pictures like an interior designer, which colour to paint your bedroom, and how to create an inviting living room. Today, we present you with this list of three simple yet effective tips on how to revamp any room with objects.

1. Deer antlers. Not real ones, of course. Different companies make white resin antlers that add a whimsical touch to your room. Hang them in your living room, dining room, bedroom, or even your bathroom, where you can use them as a towel rack. You can find antlers here and here (this one’s made out of cardboard and would be perfect for a cottage or kid’s room).

2. A steamer trunk. Use a larger one in your living room as a coffee table or a smaller one in your bedroom as a night table. You’ll immediately look as if you’ve travelled the entire world. Extra points if you manage to get hold of one with ancient labels plastered all over. Find your steamer trunk in your local furniture or antiques store.

3. A wax-covered bottle. This one isn’t just stylish, but also shows you’re a patient decorator. Simply take an empty bottle (even better if it’s oddly shaped), stick a candle into it, and use it until it’s fully melted. Repeat until the bottle is covered with melted wax. Some people prefer to use candles that are the same colour; others use different colours.

Four Ways to Display Family Pictures Like an Interior Decorator

Decorating trends come and go, but step into any home, anywhere, and you’ll find art hanging from the walls. That’s because displaying images on the walls is one of the simplest, most effective ways of giving life to a room.

Finding good art, however, can be time-consuming and expensive. You could use family pictures instead, but it’s hard to make these look as good as framed, ready-to-go art.

Or is it?

Follow these four steps to display your cherished family moments, and you’ll find friends and neighbours praising your good taste.

1. Make it (Really) Big. Your home printer may top out at 8-by-10-inch formats, but you can always resort to companies such as Shutterfly, which offers 11-by-14, 16-by-20 and 20-by-30-inch prints.

If you want to go even bigger and cover an entire wall with one image, check out this company. Not for the faint of heart, but it does create an impressive effect.

2. Make it a Puzzle. Posterazor is a free software allows you take a photo and digitally cut it into pieces that can be printed on your home printer and assembled to create a cool poster. (Rasterbator does the same thing online.)

3. Make it Vinyl. Have fun turning digital photos into reusable vinyl decals. You can have objects, people, and backgrounds cut out from the final result. Wallhogs has good prices and good reviews.

4. Make it Canvas. This Canadian company allows you to make a canvas out of any picture, turning it into instant art that’s also very durable.

Enjoy a Day in the Sun at Georgetown’s Farmers’ Market

With the beautiful weather and balmy sunshine we’ve been enjoying in southern Ontario, it’s a great time to be out and about, exploring your community.

Do you live in Georgetown? If so, you may already enjoy weekly jaunts to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings. Main Street says goodbye to cars and welcomes local farmers to fill up the street with their stalls and local products (Main Street South, between Church and James St.). Many delicious items are available for sale, from local produce, fruits, and meats to fresh baked goods, sweets, and maple syrup. You can even get items from local crafters, like jewellery, kids’ clothes, or locally-built furniture.

The colours of your bedroom should be all about creating your ideal personal space, where you’ll feel calm and at ease. Before painting your bedroom a certain colour, here are a few things you’ll want to consider.

First, you should decide what kind of mood you want to create in your room. The colour of the room will determine how the room looks and feels, so before you buy a tub of paint figure out whether you want it to be quiet and calm or fun and exciting. The colour will also reflect on the size of the room, so be sure to go with bright colours if your room is smaller.

If you’re having trouble deciding between the countless choices available, then consider the colours that you may have in other rooms of your home already. Maybe the new colour of your room can bring out accent colours that exist elsewhere in your home, tying everything together. Or try using two colours or shades for accents that will blend in with your base colour.

Once you’ve chosen the colour for your bedroom, you can think about other décor options that’ll add to the overall mood and feel of the bedroom.

Celebrate Canada Day in Halton Hills!

This year, July 1 marks Canada’s 144th birthday.

Every year, Canadians wear their pride on their sleeves and celebrate Canada’s birthday all across the country and around the world. Many festivities are held across the country, and fireworks will light up the sky on Friday!

There are many events happening around Georgetown, within Halton Hills, this Friday.

You can celebrate Canada Day in Glen Williams during the day at their annual festivities, starting at 8am until late afternoon. In the morning, you can head out for breakfast in the park with the community, and enjoy a baseball game and a pony shoe tournament. At noon, Glen Williams’ famous Canada Day Parade will begin, plus seniors’ strawberry tea, Halton Hills Fire Department demonstrations, a historical walking tour, an outdoor concert and much more. The day will end with the annual Duck Race at 4pm. For full event details, click here.

Be sure to drop by the Rotary Club of Georgetown’s hot dog and burger tent at the Glen Williams’ Canada Day celebrations. Proceeds will go to the Georgetown Bread Basket.

At 5pm, Canada Day’s Concert in the Park in Prospect Park in Acton will begin with a children’s bicycle parade, where prizes will be rewarded to children with the most decorative bicycle! Local artists will begin performing at 6pm, and at dusk, you can watch the annual fireworks by the Acton Firefighters Association.

You can decorate your living room with your own style and add your own personality into it, but make sure to maintain an inviting look. Here are some tips to creating a beautiful living room:

Position your sofa. Your couch should be facing the door, whether it’s angled in a corner, floating or along a wall. Your sofa will look more inviting for your guests if it’s facing the door.
Create a focal point. Your living room should have a centrepiece, whether it’s a fireplace, a piece of art, a light fixture, or a view. If you don’t have one, you can create one by showing off your favorite item in the room.
Get an eye-catching rug. A great rug can add a lot of personality to your living room. A sisal rug would be ideal, if you want it to be able to handle foot traffic. If you want a comfy rug, you could go with a plush wool or shag.
Balance the room. If there’s a large grouping of furniture in one corner, then create a new seating area to stabilize it in the other corner.

A Literature Museum in Halton Hills

In our previous blog post, we told you about a local art museum, Wlliams Mill Visual Arts Centre, that you can visit in Glen Williams. Another interesting museum that you should also visit, located right near our communities in Georgetown, is the L.M. Montgomery Museum and Garden in Norval.

If you’re into poetry and literature, you must have heard of the famous Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose first book, Anne of Green Gables, was published over a hundred years ago. During her lifetime, she published 20 novels, over 500 short stories, an autobiography, and a book of poetry, which you can find archived at the University of Guelph.

Though Montgomery spent her time all over Ontario, she and her family spent nine years (1926-1935) in Norval, just east of Georgetown, while her husband was at war. Montgomery was known for loving her gardens, so the citizens of Norval have also created and named a garden in her memory, located by the museum in Norval Park.

The museum is located in Crawford’s Village Bakery at 2809 Bovaird Dr. W. and is open daily from 9am to 6pm.

Summertime Fun in Georgetown

It’s finally the season to be outdoors and enjoying the weather! As the temperature continues to rise this week, biking, running or walking along the trails can be relaxing and fun, not to mention healthy as well. We’ve blogged about an interesting trail here in Georgetown, the Hungry Hollow Trail, which you can now enjoy with your family on a nice day.

Many events are held in Georgetown during the hot months, so your family can get a chance to meet and socialize with the community. The fun begins this weekend in Georgetown!

Downtown Georgetown Farmers’ Market will begin this Saturday until the end of September. Main Street will be closed for the market from 8am to 12:30pm every Saturday. Bring your shopping bags with you to the market, as you will find many fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh meats and other organic products, at the market. Buying fresh produce and supporting your local farmers, while soaking up some sun, can be a relaxing way to start off your weekend.

This Saturday, the 36^th Annual Georgetown Highland Games will take place at The Gathering Place to promote and preserve Scottish Culture and Heritage in Georgetown. Events are held throughout the day starting at 8:30am.

For Father’s Day weekend, next weekend, Halton Hills will host the Big Daddy Festival from Friday June 17^th at 5pm until Sunday June 19^th. Events are scheduled to take place in downtown Georgetown, Acton, Glen Williams and Willow Park Ecology Centre. It will be a weekend packed with family fun in the sun, so be sure to pack some sunscreen.

Summer is just about to begin! Get out and have fun with your family and get to know your community. Don’t forget to always keep yourself hydrated in the heat!

Which Style is Best For You at Mystique?

In April, we revealed that we’re working with a renowned architectural team, Hicks Partners, for the home designs at our newest community, Mystique.

Now that the renderings are in their final stages, we are happy to reveal that each home design will have a two-door garage, and there will be three different styles to choose from:
• English elevation designs are inspired by the Tudor architectural style, which dates back to before the 16th century. These homes are very similar to medieval cottages and palaces. Our designs feature steeply pitched gables and roofs covered in slate.
• French elevation designs are inspired by the French Eclectic home style. Our home designs feature common characteristics, such as steeply pitched roofs, dormers, and arched windows. The distinct difference from the English elevation is that these homes do not have gables, and some designs will feature a beautiful upper level terrace as well.
• Craftsman elevation designs feature low-pitched and gabled roofs. Craftsman style is known for its relaxed, simple and informal look.

Art in Georgetown

If you have a love for art, you need to visit the Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre in Glen Williams, just a few minutes north of Georgetown. The Williams Mill Centre is comprised of two historic buildings built in the 1800’s and houses the works of over 35 internationally renowned professional artists.

Collections of pottery, painting, fibre, glass, jewellery, printmaking, sculpture, photography, wood and digital art are displayed at the centre from Wednesdays through Sundays.

The current exhibit at the Williams Mill Gallery, FlorABUNDANCE by Lucille Weber, is a show of flower-inspired pieces to brighten your home and spirit, just in time for springtime. The exhibit will run until May 29th.

There’s artwork for sale at the centre, so you just may leave with a beautiful new piece for your home!

Since we began building homes, it’s always been our interest to build homes that are beautiful and unique. We want to build homes that are different from others in the market today. With our architecturally driven team, we are able to bring our visions to life, and it’s our passion to design and build artistic homes.

The home designs of our current community, Silver Creek Hollow, are highly influenced by many French architectural styles. Considering our history, it’s no surprise that many homes in North America are influenced by the French, but as much modern architecture moves towards Postmodern and Contemporary styles, we strive to build something different and tasteful for our clients.

Each of our designs is highly influenced by French Eclectic architecture with some minor details influenced by the French Beaux Arts. The most telling feature of French Eclectic is its roof, which is featured in our designs. The roofs are tall, steeply pitched and hipped, and they include eaves that are flared upward, seen in all of our twelve designs. Arched windows and chimneys are also prominent features of the French Eclectic style, which are seen in some of our home designs as well.

Taking Initiatives on Earth Day

Earth Day is marking its 41st anniversary this Friday April 22, inspiring awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. To celebrate, we’re offering a few tips and ideas on what you can do in your own home and in your community to be environmentally friendly.

You can simply support the event by taking initiatives in your own home and start with these simple steps:

1. Recycle your garbage – paper, plastic, cans and bottles are accepted for recycling. Simply put them in your blue bin and take it out to the curb on garbage day.
2. Change your light bulbs – replace incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient ones (CFLs). These light bulbs last longer, saving you money on energy bills.
3. Compost – set aside certain types of organic waste apart from normal trash and let it decompose and become a nutrient-rich soil fertilizer for your backyard. This way, you save the energy spent on moving the waste and the money you would have spent on soil, as well as reducing the use of chemical fertilizer. Read here for more details.

These are just simple things you can do in your own home to make it more eco-friendly on Earth Day. Community events for Earth Day are also taking place in Georgetown on April 30 from 8am-4pm. A Tree Sale will take place at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre, where trees will be sold at the subsidized rate of $5 per tree, and the interactive Earth Day Fair will be taking place at the Georgetown Market Place.

The arts play a significant role in Georgetown’s culture. The town has its own theatre which has been entertaining the residents for many years. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, Georgetown Little Theatre has been putting together productions for the town since February, 1961.

This month, Georgetown Little Theatre is presenting Matthew Barber’s Enchanted April, a play about four very different British women struggling with the relationships in their lives while vacationing at a rented villa in Italy. The women come together and find rejuvenation in the beautiful surroundings and discover hope and love in their lives again. Directed by Kathryn DeLory, the play is an adaptation of the 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim.

Enchanted April is presented at Christ the King School Theatre at 161 Guelph St., which is just a few minutes’ drive from Silver Creek Hollow (and our new Mystique community), on April 15-17 and April 20-23. For ticket information, please contact the box office at 905.877.3700 or click here.

If you love to bike, run or walk, you will enjoy the Hungry Hollow Trail, which is conveniently located right by Silver Creek Hollow community, just a five minute walk away.

The Hungry Hollow Trail is environmentally friendly, safe for hikers and enjoyable for cyclists. The 4.18-kilometre trail begins at Lookout Court and Miller Drive, takes you across the Silver Creek and Mountainview Rd. S and ends at Delrex Parkette. The trail includes a 385-metre long boardwalk linking the trail throughout, so you can rest assured you and your family will be safe.

The Hungry Hollow Trail is one of many trails in and around Georgetown that your family can enjoy exploring while breathing in fresh air. The trail is a great place for you to exercise during the warm months, so get ready to get out this spring/summer!
